CBD 101
Introduction
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a naturally occurring compound extracted from the flowers and leaves of the hemp plant. Unlike THC, it’s non-intoxicating and is rapidly gaining popularity as a wellness supplement for people (and even pets) seeking support for stress, sleep, recovery, and more.
What Is CBD?
CBD (short for “cannabidiol”) belongs to a family of over 100 plant-derived cannabinoids. It’s typically blended into carrier oils (MCT, hemp seed) or infused into gummies, topicals, and other delivery forms. Today’s advanced extraction and nano-emulsion technologies allow us to isolate and concentrate CBD while preserving beneficial terpenes and flavonoids.
How CBD Works
Our bodies produce endocannabinoids—messenger molecules that help regulate appetite, mood, pain perception, inflammation, and more. CBD interacts indirectly with this endocannabinoid system, modulating receptor activity and supporting balance (homeostasis) across multiple bodily systems.
Hemp vs. Marijuana
Marijuana contains high levels of THC (the psychoactive compound that causes a “high”) and is classified federally as a controlled substance in the U.S.
Hemp is defined by having <0.3% THC by dry weight. It yields CBD-rich extracts (especially PCR—phytocannabinoid-rich hemp) without intoxicating effects.
Types of CBD Products
Full Spectrum
Retains all natural cannabinoids (including trace THC) and terpenes—maximizing the “entourage effect.”
Broad Spectrum
Keeps cannabinoids and terpenes but removes THC entirely—ideal for those seeking zero-THC assurance.
Isolate
Pure, crystalline CBD with no other cannabinoids or terpenes—flavorless, odorless, and often used in DIY formulations.
Potential Benefits of CBD
While research is ongoing, peer-reviewed studies and user reports suggest CBD may help with:
Stress & Mood: promotes calm and mental balance
Sleep: supports healthy sleep cycles
Recovery & Pain: aids post-exercise muscle recovery
Overall Wellness: may influence heart health, inflammation, and more.
How to Use CBD
Start Low & Go Slow: begin with ~1 mg CBD per 20 lb bodyweight. A 100 lb person could start at 5 mg per dose, then adjust upward as needed.
